Jennifer immigrated to America from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago West Indies at the age of eight. She enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979. At a time when women were not the norm in her chosen field, she rose through the ranks from an enlisted Jet Mechanic, received a commission as a Naval Aviation Maintenance Officer and retired as a highly decorated Lieutenant Commander Aviation Maintenance Officer after 20 years. She held both Secret and Top Secret Security Clearance.
Jennifer was Florida’s 18th Lieutenant Governor. She was the first female elected as Lieutenant Governor in Florida and the first African-American and Caribbean elected Statewide.
She was a state legislator for over seven years, a small business owner, former Executive Director of Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs and a Navy veteran. In addition to her duties assisting the Governor with economic development, Jennifer oversaw the Florida Department of Military Affairs, Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, conducted trade relation missions, and was Chairperson of Space Florida. She was also the Governor’s Designee on the Florida Defense Support Task Force, and Chairperson on the Governor’s Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection.
Jennifer is the author of the autobiography When You Get There; she is a political analyst for WJXT CHANNEL News4Jax and has appeared on other networks to provide commentary and political analysis on television and radio news programs. She has appeared on a variety of programs including Tavis Smiley Show, Roland Martin Show, Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics, Comcast News Network, as well as other programs on CNN, C-SPAN, Black Chamber of Commerce, Newsmax, National Public Radio and local Fox News Channel. She’s been a panelist to discuss, women’s issues, space industry, economic development, leadership, business development, defense contract, politics, government, race relations, new public administration, military and veteran’s issues.
